This line has been sitting with me. Dostoevsky isn’t talking about fear of danger or failure — he’s naming the quieter fear that keeps a lot of people stuck: the fear of becoming someone new. The fear of stepping outside the familiar, even when the familiar is suffocating. It’s odd how often we hold back not because we’re incapable, but because the next step feels unfamiliar. Yet the possibility is already in our hands. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is simply to take the step, speak the word, and trust that newness is not something to fear, but something to grow into.
